Over recent visits we’ve looked at how Dr. Luke, being an educated Gentile, used what he was and had experienced to write his unique Gospel record.  Now let’s look at how his professional life as a Doctor impacted his writing.

All of the Gospels include experiences of healing and deliverance.  Luke included in his Gospel a wide diversity of cases he observed.  It must have been fascinating to him to determine the physical and emotional condition of those who came or were brought to him, and then watch how Jesus demonstrated His love, compassion and power to heal and deliver them.

He noted that John the Baptist’s parents were too old to have a child, but God changed that.  God also did the impossible by having the virgin, Mary, conceive and give birth to Jesus.  He noted that John the Baptist, while still in the womb of Elizabeth recognized the presence of Jesus before both were born.

He noted the normal development of Jesus physically, intellectually, socially and spiritually by recording in Luke 2:52, “Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.”

There was something both natural and supernatural about Jesus’ life.  When He was twelve He kept the temple scholars captivated with His questions and answers.  Luke noted three occasions when Jesus raised dead people.  Being a Dr. he was able to evaluate the information on these miracles.  His matter of fact presentations tend to engender authenticity.
