We have been studying Ephesians 5:1-6:4 and have found that God wants us to discover and experience the secret of a quality life, especially in marriage.  In these verses you will find an emphasis on relationships:  Relationships with those outside of the faith, Relationships with those within the family of faith,   And Relationships with those in our biological families.

In these relationships we’re encouraged to be imitators of God, as dearly loved children.  The primary way were to do this is to live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.  In other words, we have been the recipients of God’s love.  Now we are to share that love with others.

It’s easy to understand that we should do this within our families.  Also, that we should do this within the family of faith, the church.  But how do we do this in our relationships with those outside of the faith.

First, live in such a way that the differences in life style and life motivation are evident - you were once darkness, now you are children of light.  In darkness we are motivated by self.  As children of light our motivation is to please God. Can others see the change that has taken place?

Second, we should expose the fruitless deeds of darkness for what they are.  This isn’t easy.  It’s awkward.  It at times requires you to break off a relationship that you have, by not going to where they go and doing what they do.

Trust the Holy Spirit to enable you to do this.  And though others might not understand, your actions will be a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
