Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand. (1st Peter 5:8)

Have you ever heard in a discussion on leadership that if you want to be a winner, “Surround yourself with winners”? Is that Biblical? Does that encourage living “in harmony with one another?”

Paul says that if grace is essential to overcoming evil with good then you need to realize that living in harmony with one another requires the following, mentioned in Romans 12:16: “Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.”

Being a winner and being proud are often twins. Winners rise above losers. It’s very easy to be conceited or condescending when you’re a winner. Encouraging a loser to become an integral part of a winning team is very difficult. It goes against commonly observed and accepted strategies of the world.

Dr. Wuest comments on this as follows: “Lowly things would be things of no great consequence so far as the spirit of this age is concerned. Lowly men would be those who in self-abasement and humility walk this earth with a deep sense of their moral littleness.”

I was impressed with the following comment in a news article about Kenny Perry, a winner of The Memorial golf tournament. “Kenny Perry, a 17 year veteran of the Tour, has six career wins, none of them in major championships. He takes pride in staying ‘under the radar’ in a profession where attention is craved by many. Last week he said that he was happy to be the answer to the trivia question: Who won the tournament that Annika played?”

Are you willing to live and serve “under the radar?”
