“I will harden Pharaoh’s heart” (Exodus 7:3).  “Pharaoh…hardened his heart” (Exodus 8:15).

As we continue to do a chapter study of Romans 11 let’s focus on finding some cross references that will help in our understanding of what Paul is saying. You can find cross references in most Bibles in either the margin or on the bottom of the page. You can also use a concordance in the back of your Bible or as a separate book.

To enrich your understanding of Romans 11:2-4 you might read 1 Kings 19. Romans 11:7 talks about those who were hardened so they didn’t obtain what they earnestly sought. In Exodus 4:21, 7:3, 14:4,8,17, it states that God hardened Pharaoh’s heart. But in Exodus 7:13,22 and 8:15, it states that Pharaoh hardened his own heart. You also will find this in Deuteronomy 2:30 and Joshua 11:20.

In Romans 11:23 Paul, in talking about the possibility of the Israelites turning back to God, says “God is able to graft them in again.” That phrase, “God is able” is found in Romans 16:25, 2 Corinthians 9:8, Ephesians 3:20, 2 Timothy 1:12, Hebrews 7:25, and Jude 24. Reflecting on the context in each of those references will enrich your appreciation for the ability of God to do what He says He will do.

When reading Romans 11:28, where it says, “they are loved on account of the patriarchs,” it would be good to remember what Paul said in Romans 9:4-5. Also, reflect on Hebrews 7:21 that says, “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind.” This will help you appreciate what Paul says in Romans 11:29: “God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.”

Checking cross references will enhance and clarify your understanding of a given portion of God’s Word.

After studying the immediate context checking cross references will help you to see that the Bible is its own best interpreter.
