“Blessed are they whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will never count against him”  (Romans 4:7-8).

As we continue reflecting on the blessedness that comes to the one who believes in God, seen in Romans 3:21-6:23, we come to the statement: “justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Jesus Christ.” Yes, when we trust in Jesus Christ we are justified freely. What does this mean?

Let me share what Unger says in his Bible dictionary. “Justification is a divine act whereby an infinitely Holy God judicially declares a believing sinner to be righteous and acceptable before Him because Christ has borne the sinner’s sin on the cross, and ‘has been made unto him righteousness.’”

God looks at me and sees Jesus Christ’s righteousness. He declares me acceptable and welcomes me into relationship with Him. There’s no room for boasting. It’s an act of God, totally undeserved by us.

God doesn’t compromise His justice when He declares a believer justified. Justice has been met by the sacrifice of atonement made by Jesus Christ when He died on the cross. This sacrifice of Christ’s innocent blood is the redemption price that satisfies God’s justice and frees a sinner from the bondage and debt of sin. You can’t pay for or earn this justification.

This was the basis of Fanny Crosby’s well known hymn:

“Redeemed, how I love to proclaim it! Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed through His infinite mercy, His child, and forever, I am.
Redeemed, redeemed, Redeemed by the Blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed, through His infinite mercy, His child and forever I am.”

Can you sing this song with confidence and joy? I hope you can.
