If the prophet Amos were living today, I believe he would find a way to proclaim
as far and wide as possible this warning found in the book he wrote thousands of
years ago: “‘The day is coming,’ declares the sovereign Lord, ‘when I will send
a famine through the land--not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a
famine of hearing the words of the Lord. Men will stagger from sea to sea
and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the Lord, but they will
not find it’” (Amos 8:11-12). That doesn’t seem possible in our day, in
our land. We have so many different versions of the Bible in print and
available even in secular stores. We also can hear it over radio, television and
the computer. We can become complacent and forget that this warning has
occurred, not only in the history of Israel, but other nations as well.
Think of modern Turkey. At one time that area of the world was the center
of Christianity. It represented dynamic Christian influence and growth.
From there the Gospel went forth to the world. Today you would be
hard-pressed to find copies of the Bible there. I am told that of the 11
million people of Istanbul only about 400 are born again believers. And of
the 60 million people in the land of Turkey only about 2000 are born again
believers. Recently three Christian leaders were martyred. What Amos
is saying is don’t take for granted that because you have freedom of religion
and the availability of God’s Word today that it will necessarily be available
tomorrow. Hide God’s Word in your mind and heart. |
