We have been doing an inductive Bible study of 2nd Timothy 3 in recent visits. We have answered the questions, what does this chapter say and what does it mean? Now let’s work on answering the question: what difference should what we’ve learned make in our lives?

The first application I came up with is this: pray for wisdom to discern the strategy of our enemy, the devil. Chapter 2 ends like this: “the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.” Chapter 3:1-9 describes what those who are taken captive actually do. What they do is destructive both to themselves and to others. If we fail to understand the devil’s strategy we will run blindfolded through his destructive mine-field.

Another application would be to check the objects of our affections. See if they coincide more with God’s priorities or with the society in which you live. The world is described as lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. Many of them have a form of godliness but deny its power. Paul warns, have nothing to do with them.

On the other hand we should seek positive role models. Paul reminded Timothy how he lived and what he taught. In 1st Corinthians 11:1 Paul wrote, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” He went on in 2nd Timothy 3:14-15, “Continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures.” Timothy’s mother and grandmother were great role models to follow. It is wise to associate with positive role models.
