In reading 2nd Timothy 2:14-26 it is clear that perseverance is essential for anyone who wants to win while running a race. Paul demonstrated this throughout his years as an apostle. Now he encourages Timothy to keep on running the race with perseverance.

He knows Timothy will face much opposition and be tempted by things that can distract him and get him sidetracked. Timothy needs to stay focused and he is challenged to keep on reminding other believers to likewise stay focused.

How can we stay focused? First, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (verse 15). God’s word is, “a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105). In the same Psalm it reads, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word.” Then the psalmist declares, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (verses 9 & 11).

God’s word will keep you from getting entangled in godless chatter. It will assure you that “God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: ‘The Lord knows those who are his,’ and ‘Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.’” In other words, the way to avoid things that distract and sidetrack you is remind yourself who you are.

The Lord knows those who are his. The question is, do those who are his know with certainty that God knows them? That assurance comes as you saturate your mind and heart with God’s promises.
