We have been looking at 1st Timothy 1 over the last few days. Paul is writing Timothy, the pastor of the church in Ephesus, urging him to deal with false teachers. Knowing Timothy, who is young and timid by nature and might be intimidated by this challenge, Paul shares how God has graciously and powerfully transformed his life. Since God reached him, the chief of sinners, He can reach anyone else who trusts in Him.

Then Paul writes in verses 18-19: “Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, holding on to faith and a good conscience.”

Doing the work of God in a hostile world is a battle. Even if you have been gifted and affirmed, the challenge is overwhelming at times. To be armed for battle you need to keep in mind who you are and what your assignment is. Then, as you face the foe, remember the instructions and fight the good fight.

But don’t fight in your own strength. Never forget that the battle is the Lord’s. Your part is to trust in Him. His grace is sufficient. Maintain a good conscience by humbly acknowledging that you are who you are by the grace of God. Be honest about your accomplishments and failures. Don’t brag. Always give glory to God for what He has done in and through you.

Paul mentions a couple of guys who were careless and rejected these instructions only to see their faith shipwrecked. So fight hard. Fight humbly. Be faithful. And always give God the glory.
