It is great to live in a land where we can enjoy freedom. We are free to worship God, work for Him, and walk with Him. We can also choose to do our own thing, so long as it doesn’t infringe on the freedom of others.

I point out in the book that freedom and responsibility are not contradictory concepts or dynamics in the Christian life. Both are to be experienced simultaneously. As you work on them you will encounter the creative tension between them, but that produces maturity and character. We are freed to serve, but we must work at maintaining balance between the extremes of rigidly adhering to a narrow set of rules and of following a laissez faire attitude where most anything goes.
This has always been a challenge in the history of God’s people. The Old Testament closes with the book of Malachi. He exposed the sin of compromise and called on them to remember God loves them and wants them to repent and renew their commitment to walk in the light of His word. If they do He will graciously forgive and bless. If they don’t He will have to let them face dire consequences.
