In our last two visits we learned some lessons from Moses and David about coping during times of disappointment and discouragement.

Looking at the life of Paul you discover that when he went through challenging times he focused on what God had already done and was presently doing through him and others.  In his prayers he generally started by thanking God for what He had done in the lives of those he wrote.  He thanked God that they were believers, loved fellow Christians, had a firm hope about their eternal destiny and were growing in their faith (Colossians 1:3-6).  By thanking God for what He already had done his own faith was strengthened.

While in prison he wrote about some who ministered to further their own reputation.  Though they preached “Christ out of envy and rivalry,” Paul declared, “What does it matter?  The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached.  And because of this I rejoice” (Philippians 1:18).

He then shared, we should not be anxious; a feeling similar to disappointment and discouragement.  Rather, “in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”  Why?  Because then “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

In addition, he encouraged all: “Whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things” (Philippians 4:6-8).

That’s how Paul overcame disappointment and discouragement.  What’s your strategy?
