In our last visit we discovered, by considering some experiences in the life of Moses, that the danger of discouragement and disappointment after years of faithful obedience is to impulsively react in disobedience to yet another test.  Let’s now consider what we can learn from how David coped with discouragement and disappointment.

He was anointed to become the king of Israel, but Saul was still king.  David was a faithful supporter of Saul, but Saul was threatened by him.  Gradually this led to David fleeing for his life, while Saul hotly pursued him.

Saul’s son, Jonathan, became a close friend and confidant to David, sealing their relationship with a covenant.  His friendship gave David the assurance that he was not alone in the midst of his discouragement, disappointment and despair.  He assured David time and again that he would support him as God’s anointed.  He “helped him find strength in God” (1 Samuel 23:16-18).

There was something special about having a faithful friend verbally affirm God’s call on his life, probably with a warm embrace and twinkle in his eye. Listen to a description of their relationship: “Jonathan said to David, ‘Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the Lord’” (1 Samuel 20:42).

He was what Solomon called, “a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24).  Such a friend will lift your spirit when discouraged and disappointed and help you find strength in God.

Do you have such a friend?  If not, ask God to bring such a person into your life, and when He does, cultivate the relationship.
