In our last visit we began structuring information we gathered from Paul’s farewell address to the Ephesian Church elders found in Acts 20:17-21:1.

The first point was his manner, or the kind of person he was.  Now let’s consider his message.  He said to them, “You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you.”  So he started by getting to know their needs and addressing them.  He said, “I have declared…that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus.”  In other words, he was not just dishing out good advice for them to apply to their circumstances.

He addressed the heart of everyone’s need – we are sinners who need to repent of our sins and turn to Jesus Christ and have faith in Him.  In addition, he testified “to the gospel of God’s grace.”  That is, trusting in God to do in them what they couldn’t do for themselves.  Then, once they trusted in Jesus Christ, he didn’t hesitate “to proclaim…the whole will of God.”

He reminded them that for three years he never stopped warning each of them night and day with tears.  He did this by teaching them publicly and from house to house.  As we saw earlier, when he found some disciples who didn’t understand the gospel of God’s grace he clarified it for them.  Then he taught in the synagogue until some maligned his message, so he moved to the lecture hall of Tyrannus, where he had daily discussions.  He did this for two years, with the result that all who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.

Yes, his message was truly powerful.
