I was fascinated in our study of Mark 5 to notice, as individuals were experiencing the grace and power of God in their lives, there was ridicule expressed by many around them.

When the demoniac was delivered the people of that region pleaded with Jesus to leave their region. When the woman with an incurable illness touched Jesus garment and was healed Jesus turned and asked, "Who touched me?" This time it was the disciples who said, "You see the people crowding against you, and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?'" You almost hear the sarcasm in their voice.

And when Jesus entered Jairus' home the people laughed at Him when He said, "The child is not dead but asleep." Jesus had the last word in each case. He did His thing in meeting the desperate need of responsive hearts around Him. In one case the woman was asked to identify herself as having been healed. In another case the delivered man was sent back to bear witness to a resistant family and community. And in the final case they were expressly told not to tell anyone. This suggests there is an appropriate time to stand up and identify yourself as one who was redemptively touched by Jesus.

Also, there are times when we are to witness even in a hostile community. And there apparently are times when we are to keep our mouths shut. Knowing how to respond and what to say or not to say is dictated by the Lord, so we must stay close to Him and listen for His promptings. He knows what is best in each situation.

What Jesus taught in Mark 4 He went out and modeled in Chapter 5. Remember what He taught and follow His example.
