Ruth and Boaz made wise choices, seemingly in all they did.  In spite of this they, at times, experienced momentary setbacks, but faithfulness on their part resulted in unanticipated positive outcomes.

Neither thought they would parent a child.  Ruth and Mahlon no doubt had tried.  Boaz was getting older and had no apparent prospect on the scene until Ruth arrived.  When they married and Ruth became pregnant their hope for a child, let alone a son, arose.

Obed’s birth became a key link in the chain of family ties that resulted in the birth of David and ultimately the promised Messiah.  There is no indication after the child was born that they were aware of how significant a place he would have in God’s plan of redemption.  Others expressed hope and declared a blessing.

When you read the family tree at the end of the book and do a little more research on the family tree you find that Rahab the harlot was related to Boaz, as was Tamar the prostitute, who was the mother of Perez.  Then, of course there was Ruth who was a Moabite.

Isn’t it amazing to see God’s grace at work in all these and other historical idiosyncrasies.  Choices matter.

But God is not limited to our faithful obedience.  The psalmist concluded in Psalm 138:8, “The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me.”  Solomon explained in Proverbs 16:9, “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.”  That is why it would be wise to seek God’s guidance in prayer and through His word and then faithfully trust and obey, because choices really do matter.
