We have been studying 1st Timothy 6 seeking to amplify a three point outline under the title, “Godliness with Contentment.”  We amplified the first two points in previous visits.  Now let’s turn our attention to the third point: The priority of true life over wealth.

Paul encouraged Timothy and then others through him to “take hold of the life that is truly life.”  How does one do this?

In the same verse he writes: “lay up treasures for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age.”  This is amplified further with the words that preceded them: “Do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.”  God gives wealth to some so they can be conduits to share what God has provided with others less fortunate.

This does not excuse them from doing other good deeds, like teaching, witnessing, helping, etc.  In fact, for one like Timothy who was gifted for service, he is to use his gifts to help others and flee from the temptation of using his gifts for self-aggrandizement.

He is commanded to “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.”  He is to “fight the good fight of the faith.”  He is to “take hold of the eternal life to which (he was) called when (he) made (his) good confession in the presence of many witnesses and to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ” (verses 11-14).  Finally, “guard what has been entrusted to your care” (verse 20).

That is how you give priority to true life over wealth or any other goal you might be tempted to pursue.
