In our study last week we discovered how God has a plan for our lives and has all the details of that plan written in a book before we experience any of those details.  Timothy discovered this in his own life.

Before I study a book of the Bible I usually like to understand who wrote the book and to whom it was addressed.  What I would like to do is a biographical study of the life of Timothy, Paul’s young associate.  Paul wrote two letters to him found in the New Testament.  It will be interesting to see how God’s plan for his life unfolds in the Bible.

To do a biographical study I use an approach similar to a topical study.  I call it the “3C” study.  First you collect all the references to a character found in the Bible, look them up and make a list of all the information you find.  Once you’ve done that you correlate this information into an outline.  You can do this by developing an historical sketch or a character portrait.  When you finish doing that you crystallize what you’ve learned into some applications you can make to your own life.

Use a concordance to find all the references to the individual.  In Timothy’s case you will find information about him in the book of Acts chapters 16 through 20, Romans 16:21, 1st Corinthians 4:17; 16:10, 2nd Corinthians 1:1,19, Philippians 1:1; 2:19-23, Colossians 1:1, 1st Thessalonians 1:1; 3:2,6, 2nd Thessalonians 1:1, Philemon 1, Hebrews 13:23, and of course both letters Paul wrote to him.

When I did this I came up with a long list of details, some of which are repetitive, but all of which are important.  Just doing the first step is informative and enriching.  Why not do some digging on your own in preparation for our next visit.
