As we come to the close of studying Matthew 6:9-13, where we have been Learning from the Disciple’s Prayer, let’s consider one final thought.

In some late manuscripts the prayer ends as follows: “For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen.”  The prayer began with worship, and here it ends with worship.  Worship is the acknowledgement that God is in control.  He has the power to stay in control and that will be true forever.  Because of this He displays His glory and takes delight in our affirming His right to do so.

When we bask in His glory there is every reason to expect our requests to be answered.  In fact we can expect more than what we ask for and much, much more.  When we declare, “Amen,” what we are saying is, “May it be so,” or even stronger, “So be it!”  There is, implicit in this, a humble spirit of confidence, and of expectation.  Yes, there is even a sense of boldness.  And that is the way it should be.

Jesus, through His life and death, made a new and living way for us to enter into God’s presence with boldness, according to Hebrews 10:19-22.  I believe this is a part of what Jesus had in mind when He encouraged us to believe that we will receive answers to our prayers when we come to the Father “in the name of Jesus.”  God honors prayers and petitions that are uttered and based on the merit of His Son, Jesus Christ.  He promised to answer such prayers.

He is pleased to accept our worship and praise.  So let’s commit ourselves to practice what we have learned from the disciple’s prayer in Matthew 6:9-13.
