In our last visit we began to develop the final step in our three “C” study of the topic of joy in the book of Philippians. Let’s continue to crystallize what we have learned in our study into some practical applications we can make to our own lives.

Paul made it clear that I can contribute to creating an atmosphere of joy by living in harmony with fellow Christians. He agreed with the psalmist who wrote in Psalm 133, “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity. It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down upon the collar of his robes. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.”

When Old Testament priests prepared themselves for being anointed to serve as priests and oil was poured over them, I’m sure there was rejoicing by all who witnessed the ceremony. You also could imagine the pride and joy in the family of the one being anointed.

In our day you might picture in your mind the joy and rejoicing in a congregation when a pastor is installed as a result of a genuine, unanimous vote.

And even if there is not this kind of unity in the church as some with mixed motives preach and teach about Jesus Christ, we should rejoice if Jesus Christ is being preached. Basically, Paul believed God could take the message of the cross and use it to touch and transform lives, even when the instrument He uses is not perfect. He rejoiced whenever the message of the cross was proclaimed.

Remember the message is more important than the messenger.  Rejoice whenever and however the message of the cross goes forth.
