We’ve grown up in an era when knowledge has exploded, but wisdom, if anything, has lost ground.  James shows us how to be a part of the answer to this dilemma, rather than contribute to the problem.

The lack of wisdom makes us vulnerable to deception.  And it’s clear who is behind this – the great deceiver, the devil.  How do you keep from playing into his hand and in stead become a part of God’s antidote to deception?  The wise man, Solomon, wrote in Proverbs 9:10, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

But how does one come to fear the Lord in this way?  James says, we “should be quick to listen.”  More specifically, he says in James 1:22, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”  The word he’s referring to is the Word of truth, which is the Word of God (verse 18).

People are deceived when they blame God for bringing temptations their way.  James says, “Don’t be deceived.”  God gives good and perfect things to us.  New life through faith in Christ is made known to us through God’s Word.

How we should live as new believers is also found in His Word.  But, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves.  Do what it says.”  This kind of listening involves more than just getting a shot in the arm.  It’s getting full exposure, or getting fully infected with what God says.

“The man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it – he will be blessed in what he does” (James 1:25).  This is God’s antidote to deception.
