In recent visits we’ve studied what James 1 says about being victorious in trials and over temptation.  In the light of what we’ve discovered let’s consider the desired response to trials and temptations.

James says we should look at trials as God’s way of affirming us.  That’s why we should “Consider it pure joy.”  The next step is endurance.  Hang in there by faith.  Even if you don’t understand, trust God to work something good in your life and mature you.

If that doesn’t make sense James said that if you lack wisdom in the midst of a trial, or many trials, ask God for wisdom.  He’s ready to give the wisdom you’ll need to endure the trial.  Verse 12 says you’ll be blessed if you endure, and you “will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him.”

When tempted, recognize the danger lurking within each of us – our own evil desire.  Then choose to do what is right.  Again, if you lack wisdom, ask God.  He promises, according to Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:13, to make a way of escape so you can be victorious.  Trust God for grace and courage to make the right response.  Then endure by continuing to carry out your response consistently.

There are those who conclude, “The devil made me do it.”  That’s not true.  He might know your weakness and confront you with a temptation that appeals to your weakness, but you are the one who can say either, “Yes,” or “No.”

Don’t blame God, though He may allow a temptation to confront you.  James 1:13 declares: God does not tempt anyone.  He provides a way of escape.  Trust and obey.
