In our last visit I shared some lessons to remember when considering promises God has made. My decision to do this study was triggered by reflecting on the well-known promise in Jeremiah 29:11, “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

This promise was imbedded in a letter Jeremiah wrote to the people from Judah who were in exile in Babylon. They were captured and taken to Babylon and their city, Jerusalem, was soon going to be decimated and burned to the ground. False prophets were telling the people what they wanted to hear, but Jeremiah wrote, “Do not let the prophets and diviners among you deceive you. Do not listen to their dreams you encourage them to have. They are prophesying lies to you.” What they predicted was not what God had planned.

This wasn’t how God planned to prosper them. In fact, Jeremiah told them to “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too many have sons and daughters, increase in number there; do not decrease.” Clearly, God wanted them to blossom where they presently were planted.

Jeremiah added, “Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it because if it prospers you too will prosper.” In other words they were going to be exiles for some time, in fact, for seventy years. So, bloom where you’ve been planted!
