In our last visit I shared the prayer found in Habakkuk 3:2, “Lord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, O Lord.  Renew them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.”

It is important to note that the first thing the prophet did in his prayer was to remind himself of God’s fame because of His great works in the past.  Once focused on this record he stood in awe, worshiping his mighty working God.

Based on His record of responding to the cry of His people in the past he pleaded with God to do it again – “Renew them in our day, in our time make them known.”  Maybe he remembered the words of the prophet Joel, “Who knows? (God) may turn and have pity and leave behind a blessing” (Joel 2:14).  God’s response to Habakkuk’s complaint and questions was so clear – devastating judgment was coming – that he felt he had to accept God’s impending wrath.  But even in his acceptance he had faith to plead – “remember mercy!”

Then to bolster his faith he writes out recollections of God’s mighty deeds in Israel’s history.  He realized in his reflections that God came out to deliver His people, to save His anointed one (Habakkuk 3:13).  Then, as if he heard the rumbling of the approaching army in the distance, he cried out, “I heard and my heart pounded, my lips quivered at the sound; decay crept into my bones, and my legs trembled.”  Yet he humbly declared, “I will wait patiently for the day of calamity to come on the nation invading us” (Habakkuk 3:16).

With a focus on God faith is strengthened, and when faith is strengthened the result will be patience as you wait for God to fulfill His purpose and plan for you.
