Do not be proud.  Do not be conceited.  (Romans 12:16)

In our last visit I shared an experience I had as a young man.  I noticed how a prominent preacher showed partiality toward important people following a service where he had spoken.  I determined I would never do that.

I have found it easier said than done.  I wish I could say I followed through consistently with that commitment.  Thankfully the Spirit of God often reminded me of my commitment.  And I’m glad He has.

I can remember the father of a young woman in our church.  He abandoned his family due to alcoholism when she was a young girl.  Then he came back into her life when she was married and had a growing family.  He suffered the consequences of poor choices, bad health and limited resources.  It wasn’t easy for her, but she accepted him back into her life and invited him to our church.  He trusted in Jesus Christ for his salvation.

One day God prompted me to call him and set up an appointment for breakfast.  When we got together he shared with me what God was doing in his life.  It was not something grand or spectacular.  I was glad, but not impressed, until he shared something God used to humble me deeply.  He said the first thing he does each morning is slip out of bed, get on his knees before God and thank Him for all He has done for him.  He said it matter-of-factly, but with a ring of authenticity.

I thought to myself, “When was the last time I did that?” and had to admit, “Not recently.”  This lowly man ministered to me that day.  This often is what happens when you “associate with people of low position.”

Am I willing to put myself in the position where I can learn from someone of low position?
