To him be the glory forever!  Amen. (Romans 11:36)

In recent visits we’ve looked at Paul’s burst of praise and humble worship expressed at the close of Romans 11.  Let’s continue by looking at verse 35, “Who has ever given to God, that God should repay him?”

There are times when we come into God’s presence and try to impress Him with what we’ve done for Him or given to Him.  It’s almost as though you are caught saying, “God, you are great, but I hope you have noticed what I’ve done for you, and because of that would you please give me this or that in return.”

Elijah came close to this as Paul quotes him earlier in Romans 11:2-3, “he appealed to God against Israel: ‘Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me?’”  He probably thought, “Will You not protect me, please?”

Notice how easy it is to get our focus off of God and on to ourselves.  That is not worship.  True worship recognizes and affirms only God.  It is preoccupied with Him.  It affirms what Paul closes with in verse 36, “For from him and through him and to him are all things.  To him be the glory forever! Amen.”

God is before all things.  All things were created by Him.  In that sense they are “from Him.”  They are sustained by Him or “through Him.”  And they ultimately are accountable “to Him.”  Nothing has meaning and purpose apart from Him.  That is why He will not share His glory with another.

So let us bow before the Triune God - The Father, The Son Jesus Christ, and The Holy Spirit - and declare with all our heart and voice: “To him be the glory forever! Amen.”
