Today I would like to introduce you to what I would call a Category D request. Let me describe it for you. Many times in our lives we feel a strong desire for something. But as we think about it, we realize what we are longing for is outside the will of God for us. Should we squelch this desire?

I don’t think so, at least not without bringing it before God. It is far better to pour out before God those feelings and thoughts. Then, having gotten them off my chest, I need to affirm my commitment to obey God’s will whether I feel like it or not.

Is this impertinent? Before you say yes, consider Christ’s prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. He and the Father both knew what was needed to save the human race from sin. They had agreed before the foundation of the world and had committed themselves to carry out the plan. This is spelled out in1 Peter 1:18-20 and Revelation 13:8. But when it came right down to it, Jesus temporarily buckled under the heavy load. He went to His Father and vented the pressure He was feeling. “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.”

If He had stopped at that point in His prayer, He would have been asking for something He knew was wrong. He knew that. Yet He felt a strong pull in that direction. He even repeated the prayer two more times. But ultimately He would not give in to desire when He knew better. As hard as it was, He wanted to do His Father’s will. That’s why He added, “Yet not as I will, but as You will” (Matthew 26:36-44).

This therapeutic prayer led to Christ’s victory on the cross!
