My wife and I are having the joy of attending graduations for some of our grandkids. Thinking about this milestone in their lives I remember reading about a graduation address given by the wartime British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill.

He was asked to give the graduation address at a prestigious British School. He gave what likely was the shortest graduation address on record. He looked the students in the eye and said, “Never. Never. Never give up!” After a moment of silence to let his words sink in he sat down. I’m sure that class never forgot his challenge. Over the years it has probably been referred to more than any other graduation address ever given.

As I reflected on it I came up with a number of ideas emphasizing the same truth. Many Biblical statements flashed through my mind. Paul’s statement in 1 Corinthians 9:24, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” Paul wrote in Philippians 3:13-14 that he forgot what was behind as he pressed “on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” And to Timothy he wrote in 2 Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

In each phase of life there is a segment of the race for us to run. The challenge is to finish each segment well, so that you will be prepared to run the next segment even better. Remember, “Never. Never. Never give up!”
