In our last visit we began amplifying the third point in our biographical study of the life of Luke: His publications as part of his ministry.  As an educated man he prepared an historical account of the life, teaching and activities of Jesus.

Being a Gentile he made it clear the Gospel was for all people, not just the Jews.  As a doctor he showed special interest in the way Jesus addressed the physical and social needs of anyone He encountered.  As a Christian he wanted to clearly share all that you needed to know to meaningfully respond to the claims of Jesus by faith.

He addressed both books to Theophilus.  Addressing the recipient of the Gospel of Luke as “most excellent,” suggests he was likely someone in an exalted position.  Theophilus means “a lover of God,” thus, not risking his identity, life or position of influence.  Maybe it merely indicated it was generically for anyone interested in knowing God more personally, or growing in their relationship with God and loving Him more fervently.

Luke clearly wanted whoever read his books to see the historical accuracy and rational basis for their faith.  Becoming a Christian is not a leap of faith in the dark, it is a reasonable commitment to Jesus Christ, the One who deserves our allegiance and fervent affection.  Luke himself exhibited these qualities as a Christian.
