In our last visit we started amplifying the first point in our outline on the life of Luke.  Under Luke’s preparation for ministry we noted he might have practiced medicine in or between the areas of Troas and Philippi.  After he traveled to Philippi with Paul, he stayed there when Paul left, possibly to help establish the fledgling church.  Caring for the believers in Philippi probably helped him discover his own spiritual gifting and also made him sensitive to reaching unbelievers with the Gospel.

When Paul later passed through that region Luke’s participation in ministry intensified.  He rejoined Paul’s team and continued from that point on, no doubt caring for Paul’s health as well.  Whatever Paul’s thorn in the flesh was, the implication is it was physical in nature.  He needed a doctor at his side to care for all he had endured in his travels and persecution, and what he faced in the future.

In addition, over the time he traveled with Paul, Luke took meticulous notes of Paul’s ministry.  Being disciplined to make the most of his time, when Paul was in custody in Caesarea he likely gathered the information used to write the Gospel of Luke.  His publications of the Gospel of Luke and Acts were a significant contribution to the growth of the church.
