Starting today I’d like to do a study on the subject of communication based on what the book of Proverbs says on the topic.  You’ll notice that up to chapter 8 in Proverbs the focus is on the mind and heart.

There are multiple references to the home being the place where helpful instruction can be received.  Parents obviously play a key role in what goes into a child’s head and what goes into their heart.  How they relate to each other and how both of them model and mentor are important.

But there’s also a clear responsibility on the part of the child.  Are they attentive to what is being taught in the home?  Are they diligent to learn, to understand, to meditate or memorize?  Hiding God’s Word in the mind is important if it is to have a positive effect on the heart.  The priority then is to guard your mind and heart by taking great care of what is allowed into the mind and heart.  Jesus warned in Matthew 12:34, “Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.”

Let me encourage you to read Proverbs, noting all the references to the lips, mouth, speech, etc.  Identify what each reference says about communication.  Once you collect the information you can correlate it into different points, and then work at putting it together into an outline.   When that’s done, crystallize what you learn into some practical applications.
