As we continue our chapter study of Proverbs 3 let’s develop an outline for what we found in the chapter.  The opening two verses provide an introduction and the final three verses a conclusion.

The rest can be organized under four points found in the key verses 5&6: trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Let’s amplify the first point from what is in this chapter – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.”  This sounds very much like the first command – “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”  This is wholehearted dependence on God, for everything we face in life.  When we’re tempted to ask why? when things go rough for us, and we think God doesn’t care, remember verses 11-12, “My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.”  Remember, “by wisdom the Lord laid the earth’s foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the deeps are divided, and the clouds let drop the dew.”

The one we’re encouraged to trust in is the creator of all, in its vastness and in its minute details.  Yes, “Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared.”
