In our project of “read it through in two,” that is, read through the Bible in two years, let’s go back now to the minor prophets of the Old Testament, beginning with Daniel.

Phillips Brooks might have had Daniel in mind when he said, “Do not pray for easy lives.  Pray to be stronger men.  Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers.  Pray for powers equal to your tasks.”

As you begin reading the book of Daniel remember the historical context.  Daniel was part of the first group of Israelites taken into exile by the king of Babylon.  Together with three friends Daniel purposed in his heart not to defile himself.  The book of Daniel is full of prophetic utterances.  God had to have a clear channel to make these revelations known.  He found such a man in Daniel who was tried, tempered and trustworthy.

His prayer life was consistent and his consecration complete.  He willingly sacrificed to do God’s will and was humble enough to give God the glory for what he accomplished.  Though life was not easy these four guys rose through the ranks of leadership in this pagan government and glorified God in all they did.

Purpose in your heart to be a clear channel, so God can work through you unhindered by the obstructions of compromise or sin.  Make yourself available to do God’s bidding, no matter the cost.  God will be glorified in and through your life if you dare to be like Daniel!
