In our last visit we mentioned that Jesus in John 8:58 claimed to be the “I AM,” Jehovah God.  In addition He said, “I am the bread of life,” in 6:35,  “I am the light of the world,” in 8:12, “I am the gate,” in 10:7, “I am the good shepherd,” in 10:11,  “I am God’s Son,” in 10:36, “I am the resurrection and the life,” in 11:25, “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” in 14:6, and “I am the true vine,” in 15:1.  All of these “I Am” titles describe how He wants us to know Him and trust in Him.

Often when He referred to Himself in this way people reacted in horror and rebelled.  How sad.  Think of Him saying to you, “I am the bread of life.”  Bread nourishes and satisfies hunger.  We were created with a spiritual hunger for God.  Nothing can satisfy this hunger other than Jesus.

Consider the title, “I am the light of the world.”  In chapter 1:9 it says, “The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.”  Every human being has some light given to them, so they are without excuse.  Paul explains this in Romans 1.  We don’t know everything we need to know apart from God’s revelation in the Bible, but we know enough to be without excuse.

We live in a dark and confusing world.  Left to ourselves we are lost, groping in the darkness.  But Jesus came into the world to give us light.  John 8:12 says, “I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  If you commit yourself to Him you’ll never need to fear darkness.  He’ll give you the light of life.
