In our last visit as we studied John 3 we saw Jesus as the Rabbi/teacher, the Savior.  Then He is referred to as the bridegroom (John 3:29-30).  Let’s reflect on this some more.

When a bridegroom and a bride come together to be married they’re culminating a process of a developing relationship.  At some point in time they met.  They became attracted to each other and spent more time together.  Their interests and affections were focused on each other.  They became more serious, thinking about and planning for their future together.  Then they were engaged, and now they’re ready for marriage, when the two become one flesh.

If I asked them at any point after they started their relationship whether they had a relationship, they probably would say, “Yes, of course.”  But the relationship, though real, is qualitatively different as they progressed into greater commitment.

Using that spectrum of a developing relationship, if I were to ask you now, personally, “Do you have a relationship with Jesus Christ?” where would you put yourself on that spectrum of a developing relationship?  Would you say, “Getting acquainted?” or “serious?” or “engaged?” or “Married?”

The bridegroom, Jesus, committed Himself to you by going all the way to the cross to show how much He loves you.  He wants an intimate, lasting relationship with you, much like being married.  Is that what you would like?  Are you willing to take that step of commitment?  He’s waiting for your answer.
