Christians should always be concerned that they share the right words, in the right way at the right time.  I came to this conclusion after reading the book of Proverbs over and over again.  There’s an emphasis on speaking in such a way that you’re communicating the right words in the right way at the right time.  Here are some examples.

Proverbs 15:1 says, “A gentle answer turns away wrath but a harsh word stirs up anger.”  You can say the same words in a gentle way or a harsh way.  The way you say it will make a big difference in the way a person responds.  Remember, “A gentle answer turns away wrath but a harsh word stirs up anger.”  The way we communicate impacts others.

Listen to Proverbs 15:23: “A man finds joy in giving an apt reply - and how good is a timely word!”  When you say the right thing at the right time in the right way it gives you joy, because you see the positive impact it has on others.

Proverbs 17:27-28 says, “A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even tempered.  Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent and discerning if he holds his tongue.”  Using right words in the right way at the right time is extremely important.  There are times it’s wisest to keep silent!  The Psalmist prayed in Psalm 141:3: “Set a guard over my mouth, Oh Lord, keep watch over the door of my lips.”  That would be a good prayer for each of us to pray daily.  Then remember James 1:19 throughout the day, “be quick to listen, slow to speak.”
