As we approach Christmas we need to ask ourselves, Why did Jesus come to earth?  One of the clearest statements Jesus made to answer this question is found in Luke 19:10, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”

Jesus said this at the conclusion of His visit with Zacchaeus.  Remember, Zacchaeus was a despised tax collector.  But underneath, this man had a troubled heart.  When he heard Jesus was passing by he wanted to get a glimpse of Jesus, so he climbed into a sycamore tree.  When Jesus approached He told Zacchaeus to come down because He wanted to go to his house that day.  He gladly came down and took Jesus into his home.

As the people watched in disbelief they muttered, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”  This was true.  Jesus touched this sinful life and Zacchaeus was totally transformed.  That’s why Jesus came to our world, to seek out sinners and save them.

But just so you don’t get the wrong impression, all who were present in the crowd that day were also sinners needing the Savior.  Today, it’s the same. All of us are sinners in need of a Savior.  During this Christmas season Jesus is seeking to save sinners.  In Luke 19:44 Jesus said to the people, “You did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”  How tragic!

If you’ve not yet been found by Jesus because you’re resisting His love and forgiveness, I’d encourage you to seek out Jesus as Zacchaeus did.  Don’t wait any longer to receive this gift of God.  Ask Jesus Christ to come into your life and save you.
