I found a fascinating couple of verses appropriate for the Christmas season but in a context that seems inappropriate.  In Luke 11 Jesus was talking to a crowd about how he delivered people from demon possession.  In verse 27 it says, “As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, ‘Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.’”  Jesus replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

Jesus didn’t contradict her with his reply.  What the woman said was true.  Mary, His mother, had heard the word of God and obeyed it.  Remember her words in Luke 1:38, “I am the Lord’s servant.  May it be to me as you have said.”   This was her response to the angel who appeared to her in Luke 1:28 saying, “Greetings, you who are highly favored!  The Lord is with you.”  Then, when Mary visited Elizabeth, she pronounced God’s blessing upon her, recorded in Luke 1:42-45, “Blessed are you among women... Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished.”

Jesus was not denying these things.  But he realized, for someone to state what is true is not enough for them to be saved.  Salvation is given to those who believe what is true and obey it.  Mary did give birth to the Savior, Jesus Christ, who provides salvation to all who believe in Him and obey what He said.  This is the ultimate Christmas gift.   Ask Jesus to come into your life and save you and you’ll be truly blessed, and receive eternal life.  Do it today.
