As a parent of 4, grandparent of 12 and great-grandparent of 4, I noticed in Luke 2:40-52 Jesus Christ’s early development.  In 2:40 it says he grew and became strong, was filled with wisdom and God’s grace was on him.  In verse 46 he was in the temple courts listening and asking the teachers questions.  Everyone was amazed at His understanding and His answers.  Notice the order – listening, asking questions, understanding and then answering questions.  In verse 49 He affirms the priority of His heart, “I had to be in my Father’s home.”  Verse 51 points to His obedience to parents.  And verse 52 identifies a fourfold balance of healthy growth: wisdom-intellectual, stature-physical, favor with God-spiritual, and favor with man-social.

Reflecting on these characteristics I thought they would provide guidance in developing a good prayer list to pray for my family members, others, and for that matter, for myself.  We need to encourage balance in the development of intellectual, physical, spiritual and social growth and maturing.

Intellectual and spiritual growth comes by listening and asking questions.  As you grow you’ll find others will ask you questions and you’ll have something worthwhile to share.  Helping others establish right priorities is also important.  Obedience to parents helps cultivate a healthy respect for authority.

But as you pray, never forget that all healthy progress in any life is the result of the Holy Spirit applying God’s grace.  Keep these characteristics of growth and maturing in mind as you pray for your family.
