If you’re involved in our project of reading through the Bible in two years you should be starting the Psalms now, two chapters a day.

I’ve entitled the book of Psalms “Blessedness.”  The Psalms show us that life has its valleys as well as its mountain top experiences, dark and dreary days, as well as bright ones.  According to F. B. Meyer, a spiritual giant of the 19th century, certain fruits of the Christian life such as meekness, gentleness, kindness and humility cannot come to perfection if the sun of prosperity always shines.

You can know true blessedness, the awareness of God’s favor, no matter what your circumstances in life, if you follow the directives found in the Psalms.  Psalm 1 gives the first directive: read, study and meditate on the Bible.  The Psalms explain our need for salvation.  Sin is the root problem, so confess it and trust God to forgive.  Then stabilize your faith and share it with others.

There’s also an emphasis on prayer and praise.  So go to God’s Word.  Believe what it says.  Live by it and share it.  Never forget to thank God for all He reveals and promises.  Remember, He is always there and looking out for your welfare. That’s the key to experiencing true blessedness.

I selected Psalm 84:11-12 to capture the theme of the Book of Psalms, “For Jehovah God is our light and our protector.  He gives us grace and glory.  No good thing will he withhold from those who walk along his paths.  Oh, Lord of the armies of Heaven, blessed are those who trust in you.”  I encourage you to memorize these two verses.
