One of the most important disciplines in Bible study is to memorize phrases, verses, paragraphs, and even chapters. Let me encourage you always to learn the reference where what you’re memorizing is found while you’re memorizing it.

After you have gone over the material enough times so you can say it without reading it you must review it. After you have reviewed it, review it some more. Review, review, review is the secret of memorizing. There is no short cut.

As you learn new verses or sections, don’t neglect to review what you have memorized in the past. Use what you have memorized in your praying. Use it in your conversations with others. Think about it when you’re taking a shower, when you’re walking or driving to work, when you have a moment here or there throughout the day. Think about it as you review it in bed just before you fall asleep. If you wake up in the middle of the night think about it, review it, pray over it. I’ve found this discipline to be the best sleep inducer.

When you review God’s Word in your conscious mind as you fall asleep, I believe your subconscious mind will mull it over while you sleep. When we hide God’s Word in our hearts, we will be guarded from sinning against God (Psalm 119:11), and grow in our faith.

In Acts 20:32, Paul said, “I commit you to God and to the word of his grace, which can build you up. And Romans 10:17 says that faith comes from exposure to God’s Word. There are no short-cuts. Review, review, review!
