Today I want us to reflect on an impact statement that introduces us to David.  1 Samuel 16:7 says, “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at.  Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

An impact statement is a self-evident truth that jumps out and grabs you as you read.  It doesn’t need explanation.  You remember it because it is so obvious.

Samuel was sent by God to Jesse’s house to anoint the next king.  One after the other of Jesse’s sons was brought to Samuel.  Though he was impressed with each one God kept him from choosing one.

God said, I don’t look for the same thing man looks for.  Man sees surface things such as height or handsome features.  God looks at the heart.  Inner qualities are always more important to God than outward appearances.  God often uses individuals who in the eyes of others are rejects. David was out tending sheep when Samuel began the process of selecting the next king to anoint.  When he was finally brought before Samuel it says, “He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features.”

When it says God doesn’t look at the outward appearance, it doesn’t mean He only looks at those who have nothing going for them outwardly.  It doesn’t hurt to be handsome, or to be tall, or to have a good voice.  That is, unless you rely on those surface qualities, or become proud because of them.

God uses anyone who has a heart for God and is committed to the honor and glory of God.  Are you that kind of person?
