When reading Leviticus the repeated detailed requirements for the sacrifices might get you bogged down.  It’s important to note some of the characteristics.  The animal to be sacrificed was to be without blemish.  Blood plays a significant role.  The reason for this is found in chapter 17:11, “The life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.”  Worshipers place their hand on the head of the animal to be sacrificed, indicating identification with the sacrifice - innocent blood was shed in behalf of the guilty.

In the rituals described it’s clear, sacrifices for sins only covered sin for a period of time.  Year after year the High Priest had to repeat sacrifices for his own sins and the sins of the people, chapter 9.  These sacrifices anticipated the sacrifice Jesus Christ made when He gave His life on the cross.

The difference between these sacrifices and His is declared in the book of Hebrews 9:12, “Jesus Christ entered the Most Holy Place ONCE FOR ALL by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption.”  Jesus Christ didn’t have to sacrifice Himself repeatedly - it was once for all - the reason being, His sacrifice was efficacious to obtain eternal redemption.

Praise God, as you read about these sacrifices.  They anticipated the ultimate, adequate, perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ.  It’s on the basis of accepting His sacrifice that you are forgiven, cleansed and accepted into the family of God.  Believe it!
