A tragic truth found in the Bible is that when we reject God’s Word, which in essence is rejecting God, there are bitter consequences. Those consequences impact not only us but also those around us. We see this as we amplify the focus of the book of Jonah: Mobilized to Minister. Notice the cost of Jonah’s rebellion found in Chapter one of his prophecy. First, the boat fare to Tarshish. Then the fierce storm that came up as they sailed towards Tarshish. In fact, the storm was so severe the sailors started throwing the cargo overboard. That was a significant loss. Then there were the sailors who feared for their lives as they cried out to their gods, hoping they would help. When they found Jonah asleep they woke him up and challenged him to cry out to his God. Maybe He would provide some help. When innocent people are around us they often are deeply hurt by the consequences of our rebellion. If you are married, think of the impact on your spouse. If you’re a father, think of the impact of your rebellion on your children. Think of friends and loved ones who you care about and who care about you. Often they are deeply hurt because of your rebellion against God. Consider seriously the unintended consequences of rebelling against God and His Word. Humble yourself in repentance and open your heart to listen afresh. For Jonah what might have been was shattered on the rocks of rebellion. Don’t let this happen to you.
