In our last few visits we’ve reflected on Luke 24:13-35. We saw the two Emmaus disciples move from disillusionment and despair to discovery and inexpressible delight. After Jesus explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself He shared a meal with them in their home. While He took bread, gave thanks, broke it into pieces and gave it to them, suddenly their eyes were opened and they recognized Him. Apparently, as soon as they recognized Him He disappeared from their sight. There is no mention of them asking each other, “Where did He go?” Or, “Was this just imagination?” No, listen to what Luke 24:32 says: “They asked each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’” Once their eyes were opened and they recognized him, Jesus’ physical presence was not necessary any more. From then on it would be a faith life, trusting in His Word. As I meditated on this experience of the two Emmaus disciples I asked myself, “In all the church services I’ve attended over the years how often have I left church saying to myself or to others, “My heart was burning within me while the Scriptures were presented to us. I sensed Jesus was there, opening my mind and heart to the truth, so I could walk in it.” As one called to proclaim God’s Word, my heart’s desire is that those who hear me would move from disillusionment and despair to discovery and inexpressible delight!
