In our last visit we discovered that Jesus at times communicated in a direct/indirect way. At other times He communicated in an indirect/direct way. The most vivid example of this is found in John 3 when Nicodemus came to Him one night. He was a Pharisee, a member of the ruling council. He greeted Jesus warmly, saying, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.” It seems Jesus ignored what Nicodemus had said. It’s as though He started a whole new conversation with an indirect/direct response, declaring, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” This response discombobulated Nicodemus as he blurted out, “How can a man be born when he is old? Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!” Though confused he was caught by Jesus’ indirect/direct words and listened intently as Jesus went on to explain that being born again is not a second physical birth, but rather a spiritual birth, implemented by the Holy Spirit. Then to clarify further Jesus referred to an Old Testament event that Nicodemus would have recalled. It isn’t clear how this night-time conversation ended, but Nicodemus is mentioned later in John’s Gospel as appealing for Jesus to be given a hearing in the counsel. He is again mentioned as helping Joseph of Arimathea place Jesus’ dead body in a tomb. I believe He became a true follower of Jesus.
