As we come to the conclusion of our study of the life of Gideon based on Judges 6-8 it is time to make the most important point in this study: God is the central person in this story. God, synonymous with the angel of the Lord, came down to where Gideon was working. God promised to be with Gideon as He called him mighty warrior and assigned him the mission of saving Israel out of Midian’s hand. God affirmed who He is by igniting the offering Gideon prepared for Him. God directed Gideon to tear down his Dad’s idols and replace them with a proper altar and prepare a burnt offering. When this happened God’s Spirit came on Gideon, enabling him to gather an army. Then God gave instructions to reduce the number of soldiers to initiate the attack on Midian’s army. God provided assurance to Gideon to press on by letting him overhear a dream and its interpretation uttered by Midianite soldiers. As the attack started “the Lord caused the men throughout the camp to turn on each other with their swords.” 120,000 Midianite swordsmen fell before Gideon and the Israelites started pursuing the remaining 15,000. When the rout was coming to an end Gideon declared, “When the Lord has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hands,” and later, “When I return in triumph.” Clearly he knew the battle was the Lord’s and he was merely a servant following orders from above. That’s why he declined the offer to rule over the victorious Israelites, and declared, “The Lord will rule over you!” God didn’t need Gideon. He doesn’t need us. But He invites us to join Him. What a privilege!
