In our last visit we began to review some lessons to be learned from Gideon’s experience recorded in Judges 6-8. Let’s consider some more lessons. It is very clear, obedience to carry out God’s assignment requires faith. Most often, when God calls us to do something, we don’t think we are capable of pulling it off. We tend to come up with excuses for why we can’t do it. But if God calls us to do it He will go with us as we obey. Our part is to just trust and obey. I remember my mother sharing her experience of getting to the place where she told God after seeing how my brother and I strayed from God, “If this is what happens after all the praying I’ve done over my boys I quit!” Fortunately, she listened for God’s response. He impressed upon her heart, “Your job is to pray. My job is to answer prayer. Don’t worry about my part. Just keep doing your part.” She obeyed God and kept on praying by faith. In two weeks God drew me back to Himself, and in a couple of months He did the same with my brother. I’m so glad she learned the lesson, obedience requires persevering faith. As we trust and obey God He can and will do His part. A follow up lesson is that God doesn’t promise it will be easy to carry out what He assigns us to do. Others often don’t understand what God has asked us to do and they sometimes discourage or criticize us. Ultimately, we need to seek the face of God to be sure we understand what He has called us to. When we are clear about our calling and assignment, then we need to courageously follow His lead. Eugene Peterson put it this way: A long obedience in the same direction!
