There are many ways the Bible describes what takes place when a person invites Jesus Christ into his life to be his Savior and Lord. In talking with Nicodemus in John 3, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” Nicodemus tried visualizing what Jesus said and comparing it to his first birth. Jesus clarified by pointing out that what He was talking about was not physical but spiritual. It was a birth from above by the powerful work of the Holy Spirit. When a child is conceived there is implicitly the potential for birth as a separate, self-sustaining human being. That potential becomes more evident with each passing day as the fetus develops within the mother’s womb. The characteristics that will be evident to everyone once birth takes place are present in the fetus. But there is something special about the birth of that person. There is great debate over when true life begins in that process. Modern technology has helped clarify this issue. But in the time of Christ, everyone knew that there was life when the child was born, when the child cried, when the child breathed independent of connection to the mother. And there was great joy and celebration when the birth took place. Birth was proof positive of life. That’s what Jesus Christ came to give us – life, abundant life, eternal life. Have you received this life? If not, then let me encourage you to invite Christ into your life and ask Him to save you. He alone can make this life real in your life. We’ll talk more of this in our next visit.
