In our last visit I shared an experience in which a little girl after her grandfather’s funeral prayed a simple prayer, asking for Jesus to be her shepherd. I referred to Matthew 19:14 where Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Previously, in Matthew 18:1-4, Jesus responded to His disciples question about who would be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, by calling a little child and had him stand among them. He then said, “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” When the little 7 year old girl at the funeral said to me she would like to have a shepherd like the one in Psalm 23 I told her she could have Jesus as her shepherd by prying, asking God for it. Without a second thought or hesitation she lifted her head, looked up and prayed, “I’d like that shepherd too!” The simplicity of her prayer was so spontaneous and authentic I believe Jesus heard and responded to her request. In verse 10 it says, “See that you do not look down on one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” The simplicity of a child’s prayer is an expression of their humility. For adults there is the need for an intentional humbling of heart before God. We need to consciously acknowledge our unworthiness, confess our sins and our need for a Savior, and then surrender to His control of our lives when we ask Him to be our Savior. Grace, not greatness, is the essence of God’s kingdom.
