In our last visit I shared some of what I said at the wedding reception of my grandson Jordan, and his wife, Jenn. I started by focusing on the statement, “God’s chosen people,” and in three ways concluded they were “God’s chosen couple.” As such Colossians 3:12 continues by emphasizing they are to exhibit characteristics of the fruit of the Spirit and have them bound together in perfect unity by the strong cord of love. These qualities, “holy and dearly beloved, clothed with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bearing with each other and forgiving whatever grievances you may have against one another,” are essential for having a healthy marriage. I encouraged them, by pointing out they were chosen by God to display the fruit of the Spirit in their marriage. Then Paul says, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.” The word “rule” could be translated, “referee.” Since both Jordan and Jenn are athletes they know that when the referee blows the whistle in a game an infraction has taken place. The game stops until the infraction has been resolved. Similarly, when peace between a couple is disrupted, like when a referee blows his whistle, it is time to stop, make things right, and restore peace. That’s how a healthy marriage is nurtured and maintained. The blue print for all this is found in the Bible. Therefore, they should “Let the words of Christ dwell in them richly.” Study the Bible, share what you find, and encourage the integration of what you discover into your marriage relationship is the path toward a healthy marriage.
